Arfandee, 9, EDF Scholarship Candidate Year 2021, Narathiwat Province

Sawasdee Krub, my name is Arfandee or you can call me Dew I am 9 years old and now studying in grade 2 in Narathiwat province. I am currently living with my grandparents, an elder brother and relatives. After my father passed away from the insurgencies in the province, my mother became the only breadwinner of the family and moved to find a job in Malaysia to survive the rest of us in the family. After the Covid-19 pandemic, she could not go back to Thailand and did not have enough money to support all of us because her income decreased a lot from the pandemic.

My father passed away 8 years ago when I was just 1 years old. My mother told me that the terrorists came to our house while all family members were watching the television and killed my father. My mother who was the housewife and never worked before, then, had to go out to earn a living to pay for the expenses of the whole family and our education expenses.

My elder brother had to drop out school while he was in grade 6 because of the financial difficulties of our family. Nowadays, he is still staying with me and the grandparents and becoming jobless. Sometimes he goes out to do menial jobs in tapping rubber and so on but earn not much daily wage.

One day, the homeroom teacher visited my family and helped find a job for my grandparents. However, they could not go to work anymore at the present because my grandfather has the visual impairment and my grandmother has the problem with her legs and could not walk 10 kilometres from home to tapping rubber. They now depend solely on the government elderly subsidiary fund of 600 baht monthly.

I love studying Thai language and Math. I dream to continue my study until finishing secondary school and find a job to take care of my elderly grandparents. Therefore, I am applying for scholarship support for the coming school year 2021.
