I am a high-achieving student with a 4.00 GPA, but my family is poor. I live with my parents and another sibling. Our house is in a remote area, an old two-story wooden house that does not have a gas stove. We use charcoal for cooking.
Chok's house is in a remote area. For cooking, he uses firewood
and charcoal. They make their own charcoal to save money.
After school and on holidays, Chok helps his mother sell smoothie juices
if there is no other paying menial work available around.
Our family life is very difficult. Our main source of income comes from my mother’s selling of smoothie juice, which brings in about 200-300 baht a day. My father was injured in an accident while working so he can't work hard right now. Also my family’s rice fields are on a high land and barely have enough water so the yields are low.
My younger siblings are still in kindergarten Year 3. I walk to school every morning. After school, I rush home to help my mom sell smoothie juice and do household chores such as steaming rice, washing dishes, cleaning the house and others. During weekends, I would work to carry bamboo for 200 to 300 baht per day, depending on workload. I always put my earning in my piggy bank for my school and other expenses.
Despite coming from a poor family, Chok is very active in school, has won
many awards, and has excellent grade point average of 4.00.
I dream of going to high school, finding work and help support my parents for a better life that is not as difficult as at present. If I receive a scholarship from the EDF Foundation, I promise to study even harder, work harder, be a good person and a good child for my sake and my parent’s. I will not disappoint my parents and sponsors.
