Rattapoom, Applicant for the scholarship for children with disabilities to study in regular schools, academic year 2024

Rattapoom (New),
Grade 5, Udon Thani Province
Applicant for the scholarship for children
with disabilities to study in regular schools,
academic year 2024

Hello, my name is Rattapoom Nasompakdi, nicknamed New. I am 11 years old and currently live with my parents in Phen District, Udon Thani Province. My parents work as general laborers and I have two siblings. I am currently studying in the 5th grade at Sri Boonruang School in Udon Thani Province.
I am a child with physical and health disabilities. My mother was already very old when she got pregnant which somehow caused my disabilities when I was born. My weight and height are below average, so I had to stay in the hospital for several months. I rely on colostomy bag which makes daily routine difficult for me.

Even though New has physical disabilities since birth, his parents fully
support him to attend regular school, socially integrate and help
himself in various situations.

When I was younger, I couldn't walk like my friends. I had to go to the hospital regularly for both medical treatment and physical therapy since my body was not strong, I help my parents with household chores at home, such as sweeping and occasionally filling water bottles or feeding pets.

Despite facing difficulties in walking, New can still help his parents
with some household chores.

The distance from my house to school is about 1.5 kilometers. Since I am physically weak, my mother has to send and take me back from school by motorbike every day. She gives me 20 baht per day to buy snacks at school and teaches me to save money. Sometimes I have 5 baht left to bring home. When there are activities outside the classroom, my mother always accompanies me.

New enjoys studying Thai language and reading books. He has a talent
for reading and has become a representative of the school to compete in
the junior news reading competition, where he won the first prize.

I like studying the Thai language the most because I love reading books. During lunch breaks, I enjoy reading books at the library, which improves my knowledge. This year, I became a representative of the youth news reading group in the 71st Student Art Competition. I won the gold medal in the category of students with physical or health disabilities. Every morning at school, I always share the news stories to my school prior to the time of flag raising ceremony. I also lead Tuesdays “learning one English word of the day”.

New presents the news about his winning the “71st Student Art Competition”.

When I am old enough and managed to graduate with a bachelor's degree, I want to be a teacher. I want to teach students and help support my elderly parents.

The reason I decided to apply for a scholarship this time is that my family is poor. My parents work as general laborers and farmers, with unstable incomes. Additionally, I am physically weak and need continuous treatment at Srinakarin Hospital in Khon Kaen Province every month. My family does not have a private car, so we have to hire a car to go to the doctor every time. We also have to spend money buying colostomy bags, which need to be changed every day. My mother has to borrow money from others. If I receive a scholarship, I will use the money to go to the doctor, buy educational equipment and clothes to fit my body. I promise to spend the scholarship wisely.
